A national initiative that trains veterans to present innovative public programs based on ancient literature

Led by veterans and assisted by scholars and artists both inside and outside of the veteran community, this program will explore significant themes that investigate the connections between classical literature and contemporary America as they relate to the issues affecting the veteran community and the broader American public.

The program is based around concepts of democracy ancient and modern and is divided into four thematic units:

Isegoria - Equality

Diké - Justice

Omonoia - Unity

Eleutheria - Liberty

Veterans, scholars and artists in Florida, New York and Texas will read ancient Greek plays (Aeschylus, Sophocles &Euripides) and American historical texts (DeToqueville, Douglass, Lazarus & King) to frame discussion on these themes, and develop public programming. This content joined Aquila’s 2022 national tour across America, accompanying The Great Gatsby, Macbeth and Antigone and with the 2022-2023 tour of Julius Caesar and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice engaging Americans from sea to shining sea.
